தி English and த English
நான் டீச்சர் ஆக இருந்தபோதே இந்த discussion வந்தது. ஏன் The U .S .A and why not the India .
Here we to consider some grammatical rules . the word THE is pronounced both as thi and as tha .When the word that follows the article 'the ' starts with a,e,i,o,u sounds [take note , its the sound and not the letters ] then the should be pronounced as'' thi ' 'and if it is followed by other words it should be pronounced as'' tha ''.
*The second rule is :if the thing referred to is 'unique ' ..only one ..then the article 'the ' is added before the word even if the word starts with other than a,e,i,o,u sounds. For example, 'the sun ' the moon''...
I and my students would get into an inter action and I would vehemently, passionately and PATRIOTICALLY say that it should be THE India , because it is unique, special to us and the greatest.
Suddenly one student came with the question ''why do they advertise as 'The Chennai Silks ?'',
My reply was that ''they might (the chennai silks ) owners , knowingly or unknowingly might have tried to assure the customers that their shop is unique.
Anyhow ,in the film English, Vinglish actor SriDevi asks why not the [tha ]India. As for as knowledge goes it should be 'thi ' India.
*If at all any student by mistake had written india [in small letters , lower case ] instead of capital 'I' i would give him a 0/100.And that student would realize his mistake.
*a,b,c....z are letters of the alphabet and it should not be said as 'alphabets' all the 26 letters constitute English alphabet.
only if the letters of different languages are referred to then we can say alphebets.
